- Willem Frederik Hermans (1921-1995) gehört zu den modernen Klassikern der europäischen Literatur. Er studierte Physische Geographie, promovierte und lehrte bis 1973 als ordentlicher Professor an der Universität Groningen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs begann Hermans zu schreiben und veröffentlichte neben mehreren Romanen Gedichte, Dramen, Erzählungen und Essays. Hermans ist mit zahlreichen Literaturpreisen bedacht worden, die er jedoch zumeist ablehnte. Hermans starb 1995 in Utrecht.
